Today was state crit champs in Niwot. I wasn't really amped on defending my title, and once I saw how stacked the field was (Mara Abbot, Alison Dunlap, Cari Higgins...) I was even less so. I was surprised nothing got away throughout the long race with all that horsepower. But, at two to go, Gwen from DFT went and stuck it, the same exact move I had last year. I rolled in somewhere in the top ten.
Even though Koppenberg is coming up in a couple of weeks, and there's still a slight possibility I'll race Steamboat, my road season is pretty much done now. Riding home from Niwot I got the same feeling I would get after collegiate road easterns or nationals every year: a bit sad but also relieved to finish up a season.
So, now I'm officially allowed to start thinking about cyclocross. I'm psyched for this season, as I think my bike handling has improved from last year. The local race series on the Front Range is competitive and convenient enough that I'll mostly stick to it, with the exceptions of Cross Vegas, Gloucester, and the Providence UCI races, as I'll be at all of those events for work. Nationals in Bend doesn't have me psyched, thanks to the strong likelihood of a mediocre finish and the hordes of preening Portland hipsters that will be there. Now, it's time to start figuring out my cross bike setup for this year...
